Waking Up in Michigan

I close my eyes and all I hear are the leaves being slowly pushed by the wind. This is where I am most at ease; the most myself. I enjoy it. Waking up with the trees above your head, cooking a meal over a fire, listening to the wood crackle as it burns while breathing in the fresh air. A couple of weeks ago, I drove up to the Lake Michigan Recreation Area. There was no reason in particular, I guess it just seemed like a good opportunity to get away for a day; to keep it simple, no distractions and to just be. I knew I was getting close as both window seats were filled with views of endless trees. A bumpy, dirt road gently carves it way through the forest as to leave the least impact of it ever being there. Once I opened up my door, there seemed to be a sense of relief. The air carried the soft sounds of laughter with a backdrop of the lake meeting the shore. I smiled with every step closer to the beach, and as my feet hit the sand I felt like a child again. Whenever I road trip, hike or just wander by myself, I always feel like I’m at peace, like I have the world in the palm of my hands. Maybe because I can clear my head of every thought and just live in that moment. Here are a couple of those moments that made me smile.

Living under the Stars

Kayak-Night-Landscape-Photography-Milky-Way

Driving through the pitch black woods at 12 am until I see a faint light at the end of the road, well not a faint light I guess just less darkness. I reached the end and I can hear the waves. Beverly Shores Indiana is quite a hidden treasure. This was my second opportunity visiting this beach and it’s about an hour drive from Chicago. Beverly Shores is a secluded little oasis right off of Lake Michigan, but what makes it truly beautiful is that it’s the #7 dark sky community. Walking down the steps to get to the beach is a task in its own if you do not have a flash light but once you reach the beach you instantly feel like your hundreds of miles away. Being from the Chicago area, I get happy when I’m able to look up and see the big dipper, but here… here the sky is alive. It’s pitch black with only the stars to offer you light and the waves to play you music. Enjoy your weekend!

Exploring Iceland: The South

South Iceland Skógafoss Waterfall photography 3

In my last post Exploring Iceland: The West I talked about how in August I went on a trip on an unbelievable trip to Iceland. I traveled around the ring road for 8 days in a camper car. It was truly amazing and an experience that I would never forget. In this post, I want to share my Iceland photography from my road trip around the ring road, where we explored South Iceland’s natural landscape and waterfalls. The south was an absolutely magical place. It was quiet and quaint. Unlike the west, people and houses became more scarce as we traveled along highway one but that was the best part about south Iceland; it was about being outside, surrounded by something wild, unexpected, and beautiful. Here’s some of my photography from South Iceland.

Sunset on the 12 mile beach in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

I recently cam back from a weekend road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Waking up 4 am, I was running purely on excitement (a couple of cups of coffee). We packed everything in our cars and started our journey. Driving right along Lake Michigan, through small towns and being surrounded by countless forests, it did not feel like a 5 1/2 hour drive at all. While singing along to every song like I was closing out a karaoke bar probably made everyone feel like it was a 10 hour drive, but oh well. We made it to Munising and once we arrived, we found a small secluded camp site about 30 minutes away, right along Lake Superior. It was called 12 mile beach, secluded, quiet and simply beautiful. This was the best day weather wise, and I stayed on the beach to watch the sunset.

Somethings Never get Old

Michigan Sunset Photography

Somethings never get old.

Over the weekend, I found myself riding a bike in Michigan, with the same exhilaration I once had when I was young. It might have been due to the scenery or maybe that there was not an objective or destination that I was riding to, but I forgot all about time. Once I got to the beach I watched the grass dance in the wind as the sun slowly sets. Time flies by so much that I often forget about what used to make me happy when I was young and had no care in the world. I just have to always remember…

Somethings never get old.

Late Night Walks

Chicago Skyline Lake Michigan Beach

No matter what the temperature is or what day it may be, one of my favorite things to do in the world is go for late night walks along the Lake Michigan Beach in Chicago. It has always been a sort of sanctuary to me. Maybe it’s the sound of the cars speeding along Lake Shore Drive, the few joggers passing by, the cool breeze trailing off from the lake or the waves moving back and forth from the edge of the sand as if the lake was gently breathing. Whatever it may be, it has a hold on me. When ever I need to clear my head or just need to take a walk, I do not hesitate to get in my car and drive to the beach. It’s more than just a quick escape from reality; it’s almost like a best friend (if a place can be considered a best friend) where you get comfort, can let go and can open up and be yourself at. I walk along the path, with the Chicago skyline in the distant, I recall the familiar scenery although every visit I seem to notice something different. I tell myself that I’m there for photography which I do most of the time, but often find myself searching for sea shells hiding within the sand or skipping rocks as I watch them disappear in the night. Just maybe, these are the reasons why late night walks on the beach are one of my favorite things to do in the world.

Chasing the Sunrise

Chicago Sunrise Lake Michigan Beach

Words from a Daydreamer:

So as the sun begins to rise, a new story begins to write, about man who’s flying high, high out of sight

Cause that is where his mind is trailing in the air, his feet were on the ground but his head was never there

So off to the unseen, blue seas, the islands of  trees, the volcanoes, mountains & everywhere in between

Cause it’s not about where you’ve been, but where you haven’t seen, it’s curiosity and escaping your daily routine

Can’t be afraid to be young, have fun or wonder what’s above, it’s the risk that you take that show you exactly what your made of.
